Final Look at 2013 Conference in Penticton

Taking place in Penticton, BC March 2013, our 50th anniversary conference and trade show was an incredible success. With just over 300 turf managers participating, attendance was better than expected. Supplier support was staggering with 79 companies selling out the trade show floor (26 of them new) even after additional space was created several weeks prior to the event to meet the needs of increased demand for booth space. This number was up significantly over the 62 companies participating in Victoria last year and is historically second only to a tie of 81 exhibiting in Victoria in 2009 and Penticton in 2005 (see below for full list of exhibitors).
Education program feedback has been very positive and we were pleased to be able to present a mixture of local and international talent. Highlights most definitely included Doug Carrick, top Canadian Golf Course Architect, Tom Serensits, sportsturf guru from Penn State University and Dr. Joe Schwarcz from McGill University’s Office of Science and Society. And we now know that a bigger room is required for Mario Lanthier’s CEC point talks!
Every delegate left with more than they arrived starting with the 50th Anniversary Conference memento, a beautifully done ball mark repair tool with magnetic ball marker presented in a keepsake tin case with WCTA logo. Other extra lucky participants include the following prize winners:
We take our education program and trade show seriously but there should always be room for some fun. At the WCTA Conference and Trade Show, we strive for balance! Here are some images of some of the extra-curricular activities delegates experienced:
Kwantlen Ulumni Dinner
Organized by the KPU Turf Club and Turf Management Instructor, Stan Kazymerchyk, the 75 available tickets sold out in a hurry to what was a great, relaxed event that started the 2013 conference.
The Penticton Lakeside Resort was commissioned to host our 50th Anniversary Conference President’s Reception. This function is seen as the real kick-off to our show and gives delegates a chance to connect and catch-up with friends and colleagues. For the last couple of years, we’ve also used this event to make several presentations but we may need to rethink this process as it was a little loud and boisterous in the room this year! Once things finally quieted down, we were able to proceed with the awards and we thank everyone in attendance for their cooperation. From an event planning perspective, it was a positive to see so many happy and excited people at our show!
BCGSA Monday Night Social:
The Dave Creamer Memorial Hockey Game was another epic battle pitting Vancouver Island’s finest turf industry talent against that of the Mainland and Interior. It was a fast paced, back and forth, action packed thriller that many called a battle of the goalies. Thanks to the BCGSA Board and Larry Olson for all their organization efforts and of course the warriors on ice and the crowd who came out to support them!
Education Program and Trade Show:
On behalf of the conference organizing committee and WCTA Board of Directors, thank you to our sponsors, suppliers and of course delegates, for attending the 2013 show. We would also like to thank the Penticton Conference Centre and Lakeside Hotel’s hospitality and hard work to ensure the production was flawless. And if it wasn’t for the tremendous efforts of the Kwantlen University Turf Club, things just would not have happened so effortlessly.
Thanks also to our conference staff team who come together once per year but operate like a group that works together daily and thanks to hometown hero, Larry Olson for his onsite efforts over the past year of organizational legwork that is put into an event of this scale.
We hope to see everyone at our 2014 Joint Conference and Trade Show being organized in partnership with the Canadian Golf Superintendents Association and taking place in Vancouver February 17-21.
