Fire crews in Abbotsford spent Tuesday morning fighting a large fire that broke out at a golf club.

Ledgeview Golf and Country Club on McKee Road has suffered significant damage and investigators are trying to figure out what started the fire. Most of the damage is at the back and the side of the buildings.

Crews responded to the golf course at about midnight, where they saw massive flames coming from the building.

They had to attack the blaze from the outside at first due to the size of the fire.

“Crews were then able to get inside and finally get the hotspots knocked down,” said Assistant Fire Chief Ron Hull. “But the top floor is a total loss.”

The golf course is open for business however:

Global News has learned the golf club’s president said someone set bushes on fire against the building a few days ago, but the flames did not spread.

He reportedly thinks it was the same person who caused the blaze overnight. It is not clear if the two fires are related.

Officials have not commented on the cause of the fire at this time.

Brad Zeimer, from British Columbia Golf, said the club has produced a “lengthy list of impressive players”, including Adam Hadwin and Nick Taylor. “[They] are both in their 20s and are now both out on the PGA tour,” said Zeimer. “They grew up playing literally hundreds, if not thousands, of rounds of golf as juniors at Ledgeview. And the course has also produced other players like James Lepp.”

The course has a reputation for being a very good golf course that somehow manages to produce some really good players,” said Zeimer.

He said the course needed a new clubhouse so perhaps something good can come out of today’s fire.
