Join us for a day of educational seminars, research project tours, lunch, and new product & equipment demonstrations on the plots.

CEU Presentation: The Art of Application - Matt Legg, Syngenta - 10:00 AM

Matt Legg is the Technical Lead for Syngenta Professional Solutions, based out of Toronto, ON, where he leads all technical outreach, advanced troubleshooting, and product development on behalf of Syngenta Canada. Before joining Syngenta, Matt worked in a golf course setting, serving in the capacity of Director of Agronomy within the private golf sector. Matt obtained has obtained both a diploma in turfgrass management from the University of Guelph, along with his Bachelor of Science, in Turfgrass Science, from the Pennsylvania State University. Outside of Syngenta Matthew provides educational outreach as a seasonal lecturer of Turfgrass Entomology, at the University of Guelph, where he educates up and coming Turf Managers about the biology, ecology and management of turf and landscape insect pests.

Facility Tour : Olds College Turf Programming spaces - 11:00 AM - 11:30 AM

ATRF executive director Jason Pick with help from some current diploma students, will narrate a walk through of the education spaces, standard classroom, green houses, Landscape Pavillion, and Irrigation testing Lab, on our way down to the turf plots for lunch.

Lunch & Tradeshow - 11:30 AM - 4:00 PM

Box lunches will be provided once you reach the turf plots, eat under the big top tent or tour the vendors and distributors set up on site.

Tailgate Tradeshow - 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM

The Tailgate tradeshow is just as it sounds. We have multiple distributors to display and demonstrate their products. New this year is a new paving alternative presented from Biozem, who have poured a pad for viewing. Pat Differ of Maredo heads will be demonstrating, and Lyall Adams of Woodbay will be on site. Strongfield Enviromental will be performing a spray drone flight, watch for vendor updates as the date approaches.

Plots Project Tour - 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM

The ATRF and PTRC are conducting seven research trials in 2023, we will demonstrate experimental design, three different herbicide trials including unreleased PoaCure, an undisclosed thatch control product, as well as presenting the new City of Calgary and Sod growers commodity partnership trial in drought avoidance. The site of A-List ryegrass trials will also be prepped for viewing.

Drone Use in the Turf Industry, Bob Hoffos - 2:30 PM - 3:00 PM

Bob has been a Geospatial Technologies (GIS/GPS) and Drone instructor at Olds College since 2002. Prior to that, he was a GIS and Environmental Consultant, working with various public and private organizations within the oil & gas, municipal, & forest industries. Bob loves to Golf and fish. Bob's lecture will be followed by a spray drone presentation on the plots

CEU - IPM and Environment, Jason Pick - 3:15 PM - 4:00 PM

Jason's lecture will finish up the field day, included in his presentation on IPM and its importance in protecting the environment, he will walk though the disease diagnostic process performed at the PTRC.

Registration opens at 9:00am until 9:50am, with the first CEU lecture at 10:00-10:45am. A walking tour of the indoor facility and turf program learning areas will lead us through the botanical gardens down to the research plots. 11:00am we will present each of the 7 projects currently underway, followed by lunch. The afternoon will include distributor demonstrations, a spray drone presentation, and CEU in Integrated Pest Management.
