THE WCTA ONLINE WEBINAR SERIES!
As an official credit coordinator for the BC pesticide applicator recertification program, the WCTA is obliged to deliver enough education opportunities (with points attached) to ensure our applicator members are able to renew their certificates every 5 years. With the unfortunate cancellation of our 2021 Conference and Trade Show, originally scheduled for Feb 9-11 in Penticton, we would like to introduce our new online education series called:
‘WCTA Online Webinars’ or WOW for short!
Some notes:
• Each live episode is limited to first 100 attendees signed up – WCTA members will
be prioritized over non-WCTA members
• Registration information will be circulated in advance of each episode
• Many presentations will be certified for points (subject to approvals) but not all.
• All BC CECs are for both Landscape and Dispenser certificates, AB is for
Landscape:
- 8 total BC CEC’s (anticipated)
- 8 total AB CEU’s (anticipated)
• Zoom is our online delivery platform with secure, integrated payment through Paypal:
- the first and fourth episodes are no charge, others are $25 per person for the full
episode
• Times listed are Pacific

Mario Lanthier has been a popular speaker at WCTA, CGSA, ISA and other conferences over the years, and taught the BC Pesticide Applicator Certificate course at the WCTA conference from 2003 through 2015. He has been working in the horticulture industry since 1980 and his company, CropHealth Advising and Research, offers consulting services and pest management recommendations with or without pesticides.

‘Calibration for Pesticide Applications’
Two calibration steps are required to obtain the best results with sprayers. The first step is to calibrate the equipment for the amount of spray volume (water) applied by area. The second step is to calculate the amount of product required for the area covered by the sprayer. This presentation will use labels for pesticides commonly used in turf and lawn maintenance. Participants will practice calculations for proper calibration of different products.

‘Management of Spray Drift'
Drift is the movement of a spray to off-target locations. It is an important cause of complaints from neighbours and the public. Pesticide users should have a sound understanding of the conditions that cause spray drift and techniques they can use to reduce this problem. The presentation will focus on also review typical symptoms of plant damage caused by herbicides common applied in landscapes.

Tim Garner was an instructor for 25 years at NAIT and Fairview College, teaching in the area of pesticides, weeds, soils and surveying. He holds a BSc. Ag from the University of Alberta, a Turfgrass diploma from Fairview College, an Alberta Journeyman Landscape Gardener Certificate, an Instructor Diploma from Vancouver Community College and a Pesticide Applicators License in Alberta in the Agriculture, Industrial and Landscape categories. Tim is a professional agrologist (P.Ag.) with the Alberta Institute of Agrologists.

‘Balancing Spray Drift vs. Spray Coverage'
Nozzle manufacturers over the last few years have really stepped up to the plate when it comes to developing drift reducing nozzles. As pesticide applicators, we are always concerned about spray drift to off target locations, thus many applicators have chosen drift reduction nozzles to reduce the potential for spray drift. Unfortunately spray coverage may not be adequate for some pesticides with drift reduction nozzles and the pesticide may not be doing as good a job as we have hoped for. Join Tim as he looks at the topic of balancing spray drift vs. spray coverage.

‘Acute and Chronic Toxicity'
As information moves more easily in today’s society with internet, social media, newspapers, television, etc. many people believe cancer rates in humans are on the rise regardless of the type or cancer. This web cast seminar looks at Canadian Cancer statistics and the safety of pesticides and their impact on human health. The basics of pesticides will be examined and compared to other substances we consume or use everyday. Also discussed are ways an applicator can reduce exposure to pesticides.
