Kyle Pitts 2026 WCTA Student Award Winner - $2500!
Dear WCTA and Association Members,
I would like to sincerely thank the Western Canada Turfgrass Association Board for selecting me as this year’s WCTA Student Award recipient. The support and generosity shown by the WCTA have been remarkable as I continue my education and develop within the turfgrass industry.

I began my journey in the industry in 2022 as a labourer at Kamloops Golf and Country Club shortly after completing my first semester of computer science at Thompson Rivers University. What started as a summer job quickly became something more. I immediately fell in love with the work. I remember raking bunkers and then playing other courses in town, comparing the patterns, and constantly looking for ways to improve. My goal was simple: if a golfer hit into one of my bunkers, I wanted them to think, “Wow!”
Midway through my first season in 2022, Travis Olson, now Parks Manager for Campbell River, introduced me to the idea of pursuing turfgrass as a career. That fall I completed my Level 1 Irrigation Certificate and stepped into the Irrigation Technician role for the 2023 season. During that time I was fortunate to be mentored by Travis Olson, Travis Schmidtt, and Patricia Sloan, whose guidance helped solidify my passion for the industry.

In 2024, after beginning my studies at Olds College, Nathan Hagel hired me as Assistant Superintendent at Kamloops Golf and Country Club. Over the past two years, Nathan has played a key role in shaping my leadership skills and introducing me to the importance of data-driven turf management. As environmental pressures and water restrictions increase, I believe the ability to measure, analyze, and adapt will define the future of our industry. After all, we cannot improve what we do not measure.
After completing my Turfgrass Management Diploma, I considered transitioning directly into full-time work. However, after conversations with industry colleagues, I decided to continue my education and pursue my bachelor’s degree, which I expect to complete later this year.
I am incredibly grateful for the continued support of the WCTA and for the mentors who have guided me along the way. I look forward to becoming more involved in the industry and contributing to its future growth.
Sincerely,
Kyle Pitts
