Japanese Beetle Flight Season Begins June 15th
The Japanese beetle flight season will soon begin as temperatures start to consistently reach 21C!
From June 15th to October 15th the beetles will be flying in search of their favourite plants (300 different species) or a mate. Though they are unlikely to be seen while at low population numbers, keep an eye out, as you could spot them on your flowers, trees, or vegetable gardens.
These beetles measure about one centimeter in length and are easily recognizable by the 12 tufts of white hair along the abdomen, their metallic green head and body, and copper-brown wing covers. If you happen to stumble upon these insects, don't hesitate to sound the alarm!
Report any suspects to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) by calling 604-292-5742 OR email BCPF.Japanese.beetle@inspection.gc.ca
You can use our Look-Alikes Factsheet to help identify what insects you may be looking at. Remember to take a photo and note down where you discovered it to help us record sightings!

2024 Trapping Results Now Published
A huge success for the Japanese beetle program! In 2018, over 8000 beetles were found in Vancouver. Treatment and movement controls have proven effective - in 2024, zero beetles were found in Vancouver!
The number of beetle detections in Burnaby and Port Coquitlam has decreased slightly since 2023, while new detections were made in the cities of Abbotsford and Kamloops.
For the historical surveillance data please see CFIA's Japanese beetle surveillance webpage survey report.
