2019 WCTA Student Award Winners Announced

As presented at the Annual General Meeting during this year’s conference and trade show by WCTA Award Committee Chair, Peter Sorokovsky, we’d like to congratulate the following 2019 WCTA Student Award Recipients:

Jenna Rose (Olds College) $1250
Ksenia Thurston (KPU) $750
Jason Morgan (KPU) $500

We would also like to take a moment to thank our other award committee members, Dave Duncan, Kevin Neufeld and Scott Mitchell, for making the time to assist with this year’s selections.  It’s worth noting all applications were of very high quality and it was indeed an extremely difficult decision making process.

Western Canada Turfgrass Association;

Not very often people are recognized for all they do. I have strived for excellence in the golf industry as well as with my education.  Being awarded this scholarship allows me to believe that I am, or potentially could be, recognized for my work.

I am honored to be a recipient of the Western Canada Turfgrass Association scholarship.  With there being many applicants, I am grateful that I have been selected.  Following my Turfgrass Management Diploma, I will be taking my

Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in Golf Course Management at Olds College.  This scholarship will be used to help me advance into the degree

program next year.  It is during moments like these that make the hard work seem most rewarding.  My education has become very crucial as I find myself in a superintendent role at a very early age.  I strive for success in my education so I can begin implementing what I learn into my practices at the golf course.

I would like to express my gratitude for your financial support.  This will be with me throughout my career, as it is such an honor to receive this scholarship.

Sincerely,
Jenna Rose

Western Canada Turfgrass Association

Dear Mr. Sorokovsky,

I would like to express my immense gratitude to yourself, the WCTA Student Award Committee, the WCTA Board of Directors, and all of the members of the WCTA for selecting me as a recipient of the 2019 WCTA Student Awards.

As a student who is in his final year of his 2 year diploma, a lot of hard work and a large financial investment has gone towards my education.  As I am nearing the end of my time as a student, I am grateful that the WCTA has been there to provide support for myself and my fellow students in the KPU program.  I am excited to say I have been able to attend the past 3 WCTA Conference and Trade Shows and I have taken a lot of lessons from each of those shows.

Additionally, as a two-time recipient of the WCTA Student Awards, I am very thankful the WCTA provides opportunities and support to students like myself.  School is expensive, especially in a city such as Vancouver, so any support is immensely appreciated.

I look forward to being a member of the WCTA for many years to come.  Thank you once again for your generosity and support.

With much appreciation and respect,
Jason Morgan

2019 Student Award Committee Chair

Dear Peter Sorokovsky,

I want to take a moment to thank you for your generous WCTA award. I was so excited when my name was announced and have such appreciation to be selected as one of the students for this award.

I am in my last semester in the KPU horticulture program and am proud to say that I will be graduating with my Turf Management diploma this April. For me to complete this program I have had to work while going to school. Thanks to this award I will be able to pay off some debt I have incurred over my time in school. I am so excited to start my full-time career in this amazing and wonderful industry.

I will continue to be an active member in the WCTA and look forward to volunteering my time at conferences in the future. I hope that one day I will be able to contribute to a student’s financial support as the WCTA has done for me. I will make the WCTA proud to have me as a member as I enter my career in the turf grass industry.

Thank you for your support, it has been a truly amazing journey.

Sincerely,
Ksenia Thurston
