Olds College Campus News: Turf Diploma Compressed

By Jason Pick

The turfgrass management diploma and degree programs are still going strong amidst covid; all sections are once again at capacity.

With great success in 2020/21 amidst COVID, in-class sessions were compressed for the first 9 weeks of the school term. Those critical skills and hands-on learning took place in the College’s Landscaping Pavillion, a 20,000ft² indoor construction lab.

The indoor worksite allows installed irrigation systems, course construction techniques, drainage projects and other “hands on” core competencies throughout the winter months. The remaining 3 classes were completed online.

Bachelor of Applied Science: ONLINE in 2022

With high BASc enrollment throughout COVID-19, feedback by students motivated the program's decision to offer the BASc online in 2022.  Although the format was brought on by the pandemic, overwhelmingly positive feedback may influence future delivery models.  Each “block” course is 13 days long, offering live, daily interaction with your instructor(s) via virtual platform.  The third year is now accepting applications by those pre-qualified with transferrable turf diplomas.  The online courses are best suited for golf industry professionals working F/T with reduced winter hours. The program timing aligns with the demands of industry, delivered November through April, exclusively online.  Learn more HERE
