Japanese Beetle Collection Guidelines
2020 Guidelines for Collecting Suspect JB or Submitting Photos of Suspects
• Japanese beetles are extremely active between 10 am and 2 pm on sunny days where the temperature reaches or exceeds 21 ͦ Celsius
• The suspect beetle may not stay still long enough for you to take a photo and so you may want to collect the beetle and then take photos
• Take multiple photos under good light
• Photos should be clear, high-resolution and close-up to the suspect beetle(s)
• Note the address/area details of where the suspected JB photo was taken
• Submit photos to cfia.wstjb-sj.acia@canada.ca
How do I know if it is a Japanese Beetle or European Chafer grub?
Japanese Beetles (Popillia japonica) have distinct visual markings the larvae can be difficult to distinguish from the European Chafer. Click on the link to see the key difference between the two as well as learn a little bit more about this life stage of the beetle.
Japanese Beetle Larvae:
• 1” long at maturity
• off-white colour
• C-shaped body
Japanese Beetle Adult:
• 3/8” long
• oval-shaped body
• bronzed outer wings
• 6 tufts of white hair along each edge of the abdomen
