Message from the President - Fall 2024

Hello WCTA Members!

As another summer comes to an end, it is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of DICKIE, James Douglas (Jim).   Jim lived most of his life in North Vancouver before moving to Agassiz a year and a half ago.

His long career in the golf course industry brought him many lifelong friendships.  When not socializing or cracking jokes, he could often be found in his garden, always ready to lend a hand to his neighbours.  Jim’s warmth, humour and charm will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

In association news, there has been limited activity with the AGA-BC this summer, though a Board meeting is scheduled for early October.  Water restrictions were initially a concern, leading to discussions about hiring a lobbyist to assist with government advocacy.  However, favourable weather has meant lower pressure on water usage in many areas.  Despite this, the BC government has issued letters to water users, including golf courses, municipalities, and school districts, asking for voluntary reductions.  The Ministry of Environment estimates that approximately 26 golf courses in the South Coast region are operating without proper water rights.

Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) also issued a notice to industry associations this past May about pesticide use on golf courses.  While WCTA has long collaborated with PMRA on regulatory compliance, BC is the only province still prioritizing golf courses for inspections in 2024, particularly focusing on the misuse of certain pesticide products.

Planning is well underway for our 61st Annual Conference and Trade Show, which will be held at the River Rock Casino Resort from February 11-13, 2025.  We’ve had two organizing committee meetings, and work on both the education and social programs is progressing.  Exhibitor registration will open in late October with delegate registration to follow shortly after.  We’re also pleased to announce that the City of Richmond has approved a grant of $36K to support the event.

As the season winds down, I wish everyone good weather for winterizing their turf and preparing for the colder months ahead.  We look forward to seeing you all in February!

Warm regards,

Stu Carmichael
