Message from the President - End of the 2025 Season

Dear WCTA Members,

As we transition from fall into the winter season, I want to take a moment to reflect on the past year and share some exciting developments as we look ahead to 2026.

This last 12 months or so have been about growth, collaboration, and meaningful progress for our association. In February, we successfully hosted our annual 61st Annual Conference and Trade Show that brought together turf management professionals from across Western Canada. The energy, engagement, and sharing of knowledge were a testament to the strength and passion of our community.

A major milestone for our organization was the completion of a contract extension with our Executive Director Jerry Rousseau. This agreement ensures continuity and stability for our organization, allowing us to build on our momentum and plan confidently for the future. Our Board of Directors, who recognize the value of Jerry’s contribution to our organization, voted unanimously in favour of this contract extension. I would also like to extend heartfelt thanks to our Financial Director, Davin Marr, whose dedication and hard work were instrumental in negotiating this agreement. His exceptional efforts have helped secure a solid foundation for the WCTA moving forward.

Another exciting development this year is the near completion of our custom-built CEC tracking software. This innovative tool will provide our members with a streamlined and efficient way to manage and reference their Continuing Education Credits. It’s been a long journey to bring this project to fruition, and we’re thrilled to be on the cusp of launching a resource that will enhance the professional development experience for all our members.

This fall, we also celebrated a record-breaking Field Day at Bos Sod Farms. Thanks to our incredible hosts, sponsors, vendors, volunteers and staff, attendees were treated to a truly unique experience, including the rare opportunity to witness World Cup-quality sod being cultivated right here in our region. Events like these highlight the excellence and innovation within our industry and the value of coming together to share knowledge and celebrate our work.

In support of advancing turfgrass research, we approved funding for a study at the University of Minnesota focused on comparing construction and long-term maintenance costs between synthetic and natural fields. This research aims to identify best management practices regarding permissible hours of use, a topic of growing importance for our industry.

As we look ahead to 2026, our planning is already well underway for the 62nd Annual WCTA Conference and Trade Show, taking place February 10-12 at the River Rock Casino Resort. I’m excited to share that we have an outstanding slate of speakers lined up, promising another enriching educational experience for all attendees.

As we continue to grow and evolve, our work remains guided by the WCTA’s strategic priorities:

Driving cutting-edge research to advance turfgrass science and innovation.
Enhancing turf management professional development through education and training.
Advocating the benefits and economic impact of turf in our communities.
Growing the association and strengthening operational efficiencies to better serve our members.

These priorities reflect our commitment to supporting the diverse sectors of our industry—from golf courses and sports fields to municipalities, sod farms, and beyond. They also align with broader themes of sustainable turfgrass management, climate resilience, and water conservation—critical areas as we face increasing environmental challenges.

As we prepare for the year ahead, I encourage each of you to take a moment to reflect on your own journey over the past season. Celebrate your successes, learn from your challenges, and set your sights on new goals. Our collective growth strengthens the entire industry, and I am proud to be part of such a passionate and dedicated community.

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to the WCTA. I look forward to seeing many of you in February and to another year of progress, connection, and shared success!

Warmest regards,

Nathan Wade
